LEADERS PROGRAM

Are you ready for the challenge?

Magee Secondary is well known in Vancouver for its long-standing excellence in academics, athletics and the arts.  It is housed in a bright, modern building, completed in 2000, featuring an atrium design that focuses and enhances the school’s sense of pride and community.  Magee’s gyms, library and computer facilities are up to date and fully equipped.  Magee’s Arts wing includes the city’s finest school theatre facility, locus of the extensive Performing Arts program as well as many special district and community events.

The Magee Leaders Program: An exciting program designed for new grade 8 students looking for:

  • Academic enrichment
  • Leadership opportunities
  • Community service
Intended for current grade 7 students living in Magee's catchment area or attending one of Magee's feeder elementary schools.

Goals

Commitment, Initiative, Communication  These are the three cornerstones of effective responsible leadership.  They are the core of the Magee Leaders Program, and the basis of the programs’ goals:

  1. 1. Commitment:  to instill an understanding of the responsibilities of citizenship, and of the individual’s potential to effect positive change in our society.
  2. 2. Initiative:  to encourage students to act on their convictions and to exercise sound judgement in doing so.
  3. 3. Communication:  to develop in each student the most essential leadership tool – the ability to communicate effectively – by building skill, confidence and understanding

Program Structure

During Grades 8 and 9, the Magee Leaders are grouped together for enriched courses in Social Studies, English, Drama and Physical Education.   Their learning program will promote leadership through integrated, thematic units.   Students accepted into the Magee Leaders Program may also be considered for Enriched Math 8, and may select any one of Magee’s Grade 8 elective courses in addition to Drama.

The Magee Leaders Program will continue in the same 4-block format through Grade 9.

The program will feature a leadership retreat, thematic field trips and “challenge days” throughout the year.  These days will allow students and staff to engage in creative problem solving, team building and leadership activities.

In accordance with the costs for the retreat and field trips in the past, we anticipate the same costs for 2012 – 2013 to be approximately $550.

Student's Perspective

“From adventurous camps to Shakespeare performances, Leaders motivates me physically and mentally.  I am in an environment where 28 conscientious students strive for the same goals, and develop leadership qualities which we will definitely benefit from.  I feel involved and I belong.  It enriches and adds colour to my high school experience."              -Vanessa T

“Leaders is like a family.  There's a sense of familiarity and belonging.  It's a place where I'm comfortable.  Being in Leaders is like having 27 friends in my classes.”          -Amanda C

“Leaders is an awesome program!  There are tons of field trips, great teachers and I spend all my Leaders classes with the same people, so I can make close friends and work with them in school.  I encourage grade seven students to join this program because it is an excellent experience and a ton of fun!”           -Elsie C

“The Magee Leaders Program is helping me to develop my leadership skills as well as look at what's really happening in the world.  It is a program that has changed my thinking on global and environmental issues.”               -Rachel K
