Gardening

Starting this April, the MEC members have put ina lotof effort into building and maintaining Magee's first garden (located outside the music hallway). Even in this cold weather, the garden is attended to on a regular basis. These gardening sessions occur every Wednesday after school and Friday at lunch.
Shed-building began this early October. MEC members, leaders, sponsors, and parent volunteers came out every Sunday and Wednesday to tackle this project. We bought a kit with all the needed materials andfollowed a manual that came with this package. The students did lots of hands-on work and learned from the adults various skills, such asmeasuring, nailing, and using different tools. We also stained the outside of the completed shed to protect it from external harm (i.e. harsh weather conditions).
An announcement of public appreiciation to Mr. Wally Lee (parent volunteer) and Ms. Katalina Sewerin (sponsor teacher), without whom we couldn't havecompleted this project. Thank you foryour dedication and committment!
Recently (November), we have finished building our storage shed. After we move it to its designated area, you will be able to see it when you visit the garden! The shed will be used to store gardening tools, supplies, and some dried-up harvests such as garlic. We are planning to put in some shelves to maximize the usage of space.
On Nov. 5th (Saturday), Metro Vancouver is hosting a Youth Clinic on sustainable foods. The Magee Garden is one of their destinations of the day! From 11:15 to 12:30, Garden Leaders of the MEC will share our stories and experiences with students from all over Metro Vancouver, and we will puttogether hoop houses aroundtwo of the garden boxes to grow foods during the winter. This will be an exciting event to look forward to!
Cheers to winter-gardening!

Tutoring Club

Meeting times: None, very flexible!
Sponsors: Mrs. Tanabe
How to join: Visit Mrs. Tanabe at the counselling suite anytime!

The tutoring club is open to all grades and there are about 60 members! The best thing about this club is that it is extremely flexible. Once a student signs up to tutor a certain subject, Mrs. Tanabe will match them with any request or students that needs tutoring. Students will record their tutoring hours and with every hour, they will receive a volunteer point. All points earned will go toward the service certificate at the end of the year. These students do not need to be a genius, they just need to be willing and encouraging. While helping others, students are also reviewing the subject for themselves which is a great study method. Students in the higher grades will need service hours in order to graduate, and tutoring club is a great way to start!

"Learning is finding out what you already know. Doing is demonstrating that you know it. Teaching is reminding others that they know it just as well as you. You are all learners, doers, teachers" - Richard Bach

Meeting times: Friday after school to 3:00pm.
Sponsors: Mr.Ting
How to join: Visit friday after school and join anytime!

MCF(Magee Christian Fellowship) is a club that welcomes all, Christians and non-Christians. We are mostly led by students especially the 'older' members of the club, and we concentrate on providing spiritual support to students (and staff!) who desire it. We try to meet towards or at the end of a week where everyone could unwind as well as bring up any concerns, present or upcoming, that they would like us to pray for. When we meet, we alternate between a cariety of acitvities such as song singing, discussions on topics brought up by students, and most important of all, praying for each other.

Queen Alex Club

Magee’s Queen Alex Club was formed in September 2004, with hopes that the partnership would help Magee achieve the goal of improving social responsibility and community awareness. Queen Alexandra Elementary is an inner-city school located on the Vancouver eastside. A significant percentage of students at this school face challenges related to the inner city designation: single parent families, substance abuse, poverty, and illiteracy. Today the Magee Queen Alex club has more than forty members, sponsors five or more fundraisers a year, and strives to strengthen the bond between Magee and Queen Alexandra students.

Throughout the year, students in the club take turns coordinating fundraisers at Magee and in the surrounding neighborhood. Our annual Halloween for Hunger canned food drives in the Magee neighborhood allows us to put together mini food hampers for struggling families at Queen Alex. Christmas events focus on providing students and families with necessities such as food, warm clothing, and gifts for the holiday season. Every Christmas the club puts together a hamper containing gifts, food, and/or gift cards for a needy Queen Alex family. The sale of toques and mitts every December provides every kindergarten and junior kindergarten student with a warm set of toques and mitts. The major fundraising event of the year occurs in February, during the annual Magee Market Fair. Money raised through carnival games, a raffle and Silent Auction is used to fund literacy programs. This event and others held throughout the year, such as our "Legs for Literacy Walkathon," bake sale and Toonie Tuesday, help to provide classroom sports equipment, library and classroom books and a portion of Grade 7 camp fees.

The Queen Alex club also connects Magee groups outside the club with these younger students. Student groups in Art, Drama, English, Music, Physical Education, Leaders, and Peer Counseling have had opportunities to work with Queen Alex kids.

Literacy is a major focus at Queen Alexandra School. Many students struggle to read at their grade level and because some of their parents have difficulties communicating in English, students are unable to turn to their parents for help. To help break this cycle and to promote reading the Magee Queen Alex club began a Pen Pal journal exchange program. Although fundraising allows us to support Queen Alex families in a variety of ways, the key goal of the club is to strengthen the connection between Magee and Queen Alex students through visits, shared activities and especially, journal writing. Through the pen pal program, members of the Queen Alex club and two Magee English classes exchange journals with students at Queen Alexandra. Students share comments about their families, interests, hobbies and books that they are reading. Twice a year the students get together for lunch.  It is hoped that this program will improve literacy and provide the Queen Alex students with good role models and new friends.

This year, students at Magee are taking a greater role in the management of the Queen Alex club. In the summer of 2009, a Queen Alex Council with eleven students was formed. The goal is to increase the leadership opportunities, involvement and social responsibility of Magee students. These students also benefit as they are given the chance to work with and motivate their peers, coordinate events and support children and families that are less fortunate. Membership in this club now carries significant responsibilities, as it has become a major “sponsor” of the Queen Alex community.

Whistler Blackcomb is a ski resort in Whistler, BC, Canada. Now they’ve got a bike park and also high-speed quad chairlifts.
